Do not read the text. Read the skeleton.
- Print the table of contents on one page. Every heading should be readable as a step in an argument. If two chapters could swap places without anything breaking, the ordering is not doing work.
- Write a one-sentence summary of each section from memory, then check it against what the section actually says. Where they diverge, the section has drifted from its heading.
- Check that every research question is answered somewhere. Map RQ1, RQ2 and RQ3 to the specific subsections that address them. Orphaned questions are among the most common viva openings.

- Break up sentences over about 35 words. Long sentences are not more academic; they are just harder to check.
- Reduce nominalisations. "Conducted an investigation of" becomes "investigated". "Made a comparison between" becomes "compared".
- Check paragraph transitions. Read the last sentence of a paragraph and the first of the next. If nothing connects them, add the link or reorder.
- Watch passive voice selectively. Methods sections legitimately use it. A discussion written entirely in the passive hides who is claiming what.
Pass 4: Proofreading
This is mechanical error-catching only, and it must happen after the text is final. Proofreading a chapter you later rewrite is wasted work.
- Change the medium. Print it, or read it on a different device at a different font size. Familiar formatting makes errors invisible.
- Read aloud, or use text-to-speech. Your ear catches dropped words that your eye supplies automatically.
