How to Find a Research Gap (With Examples)

A gap is not a subject nobody has written about. It is a specific question the existing evidence cannot currently answer - and the papers in your field will tell you where those are, if you read them for the right thing.

"Find a gap in the literature" is the instruction every supervisor gives and almost nobody explains. Students interpret it as a hunt for virgin territory, search until they find a phrase with no results, and conclude they have found something. Usually they have found a topic nobody researches because it is not interesting, not fundable, or already settled under different terminology.

Real gaps are not empty space. They sit inside well-populated literatures, in the places where authors say what they could not do, where two studies disagree, or where a finding has never been tested outside the population it came from. What a Research Gap Actually Is

A research gap is a question the current body of evidence cannot answer, where answering it would change what the field believes or does. Three components, all necessary:

  • A question, not a topic. "Remote work in Southeast Asia" is a topic. "Whether hybrid schedules affect junior employee promotion rates differently from senior ones" is a question.
  • An evidential shortfall. You can point to what exists and say precisely why it falls short - wrong population, wrong design, conflicting results, untested mechanism.
  • Consequence. Someone's decision, theory or practice changes depending on the answer. If nothing follows from either outcome, the gap is real and not worth filling.

The last one is what separates a gap from a void. Plenty of questions have never been asked because the answer would not matter. Examiners can tell the difference, and "nobody has studied this" is the weakest possible justification for a thesis.

The Seven Types of Gap

Naming the type sharpens the claim, because each type implies a different study design.

Population, contextual and methodological gaps are the most realistic for a master's project: they are genuine contributions, and they are achievable inside a year. Theoretical gaps are doctoral territory, because resolving one usually requires several studies.

Where Gaps Are Hiding

Six places, in rough order of how productive they are.

1. Limitations and future work sections

This is the highest-yield source and the most neglected. Authors are required to state what their study could not do, and they are specialists, so their assessment of what is missing is informed. Read twenty papers in your area and extract only the limitations and future directions. Patterns emerge fast: the same constraint named by six different teams is a gap the field has collectively acknowledged and nobody has fixed.

2. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses

These exist to summarise what is known, which means they also summarise what is not. Look for the phrases that signal an opening: "evidence was insufficient", "studies were heterogeneous", "no eligible studies were identified for", "further research is required to determine". 3. Disagreements between papers

When two well-conducted studies reach opposite conclusions, something explains the difference - a moderator, a population characteristic, a measurement choice, a time period. Identifying and testing that explanation is a clean contribution, and the framing writes itself.

4. Citation chains in both directions

Take a foundational paper and look at what cites it. If a 2019 method was applied in seven contexts but never in yours, that is a contextual gap with a ready-made justification. Running the chain backwards shows you assumptions the field inherited and stopped questioning.

5. Practitioner sources

Industry reports, policy documents, professional forums and conference practitioner tracks describe problems people actually have. Compare those against the academic literature and you will find questions that matter in practice and have no research behind them. This is where the strongest practical-gap theses come from.

6. Recent conference proceedings and preprints

Journal publication lags by one to two years. Proceedings and preprint servers show you what is being worked on now, which serves two purposes: it reveals emerging directions, and it stops you claiming a gap that three teams are currently closing.

A Search Workflow That Surfaces Gaps

  1. Start broad and map the territory. Find the most cited reviews of the last five years. Read them for structure, not detail - you are learning how the field divides itself up.
  2. Pick one subarea and go deep. Twenty to thirty papers. Gaps are only visible at close range; at a distance everything looks covered.
  3. Build a synthesis matrix. One row per paper; columns for population, setting, design, sample size, key finding, and stated limitations. The empty cells and the repeated entries are the gaps. This single table does more work than any other technique here.
  4. Extract every limitation and future direction into one list. Sort by frequency. Anything named three or more times is a field-level acknowledgement.
  5. Cross-check against the last eighteen months. Search preprints, proceedings and trial registries to confirm nobody has just closed it.
  6. Write the gap as one sentence, then try to break it. If you cannot state it in a sentence, you do not have it yet.

The synthesis matrix is the step people skip, and it is the one that works. A gap you can see as a column of blanks in a table is a gap you can defend in a viva, because the table is the evidence.

How to Test That a Gap Is Real

Before you commit a year to it, run these five checks.

The terminology check catches the most common failure. Disciplines develop parallel vocabularies for the same construct, and a search that looks empty in one language of the field can be crowded in another. Before concluding that nothing exists, find out what a neighbouring discipline calls it.

The feasibility check catches the second most common one. Some gaps have stayed open for decades for good reasons: the data is confidential, the experiment is unethical, or the required follow-up is longer than a doctorate. An unfillable gap is not an opportunity.

How to Write the Gap Statement

The gap statement usually closes your literature review and opens the justification for your study. It has three moves: what is known, what is missing, and what your study does about it.

Weak: "There is a lack of research on employee wellbeing in remote work settings. This study aims to fill this gap."

No evidence that the lack exists, no specificity about what kind of research is missing, and no consequence. "Fill this gap" is a phrase, not an argument.

Strong: "Studies of remote work and wellbeing have relied almost exclusively on cross-sectional self-report collected during the 2020-2021 lockdowns (see Table 2.1; 14 of 17 studies reviewed), a period in which remote work was mandatory rather than chosen. Whether the reported wellbeing effects persist under voluntary hybrid arrangements is therefore unknown, and three of the reviewed studies identify this as their primary limitation (Chen et al., 2023; Nowak, 2024; Ferreira and Silva, 2024). This study addresses that gap with a 12-month longitudinal design in two organisations that adopted voluntary hybrid policies after 2023."

Quantifies the pattern, points at the table that evidences it, explains why the design limits what can be concluded, cites authors who agree, and states exactly what the study does differently.

Notice that the strong version never says "there is a lack of research". It shows the shortfall and lets the reader draw the conclusion. That is the difference between asserting a gap and demonstrating one. Our literature review guide covers how to build up to this paragraph across the chapter.

FAQs About Research Gaps

How many papers do I need to read before I can claim a gap?

There is no threshold, but as a working figure: enough that new papers stop surprising you. In a narrow subarea that might be 25 papers; in a broad one, well over 100. The signal is saturation - when you can predict what the next paper will say, you know the territory.

What if someone publishes on my gap while I am working on it?

It happens, and it is rarely fatal. Your study will differ in population, method, setting or timing, and you can reframe as replication, extension or contrast - all of which are legitimate contributions. Set up alerts on your key terms so you find out early rather than at the viva.

Is a replication study a valid contribution?

Increasingly yes, particularly in fields dealing with a replication crisis. A well-powered replication in a new population is a contribution and is easier to defend than a novel theory. Check with your supervisor, because some departments still expect novelty.

Both, at different depths. The introduction states it in two or three sentences as justification for the study. The literature review builds the case across the chapter and states it fully at the end. They should say the same thing.

My supervisor says my gap is too narrow. What now?

Narrow is usually the right direction, so ask what specifically concerns them. It is normally one of two things: the finding would not generalise beyond the specific case, or there is not enough literature to build a chapter around. Widen the framing while keeping the study itself tightly scoped.

Finding a gap is mostly reading, done with a particular question in mind. Not "what does this paper say" but "what could this paper not do, and why". Twenty papers read that way will give you more than a hundred read the ordinary way, because the authors have already done the hard part of identifying what is missing. They wrote it down at the end of the discussion, where almost nobody looks.
